Jess, you've had an outstanding semester in Organizational Learning. Your final cultural analysis paper was one of the best I've read -- congratulations! I'm really impressed with all you have done with your blog and how you have used it to truly reflect on the meaning of your learning in class.

Looking forward to next semester with you ... the end is in sight! tjc

Another interesting thing will be to see how this culture changes in the future. You can almost be certain that there will come a time when members of your school will have to address the need for a change and go through that transformational process! Yet, it seems that you have a strong leader (like my own) who can provide psychological safety through portraying a positive vision. Furthermore, you all can act as positive role models to new additions to your culture...when change is needed and an increase in anxiety shows itself!

Thanks for the congrats, by the way...I can fill you in during class.

Wow Jess! First, I am so impressed that you are already ready to write your paper. That's great news. Let's just say that I myself am not ready to write just quite yet.... :) Also, what a great example of creating a culture. You're in a neat position to write about that for your paper, and I bet it was quite interesting hearing your principal's take on it. Also, thanks for your comments on my blog. Your comparison to your class last year rings very familiar.... and not just because some of the staff act like 2nd graders... :)

I agree that some leaders "lead" much better when they have experienced all facets of the culture. Our campus president is heavily involved in each department...and everyone knows they have his full suport. So, when he offers suggestions...he is doing so from your departmental point of view, and everyone can relate with clarity. I could only imagine how hard it might be for a new VP coming into an organization...and trying to lead that culture before really understanding each department, division, etc. I am sure that the failure of new managers is often associated with them trying to install change strategies without getting fully involved with the entire culture.

HI! I wanted to comment on that last piece. I'm not sure if you remember this from Change Strategies, but Dr. Petrella had told us that the best way for people to make friends is have something/someone in common that they hate. For some reason people seem to be drawn to the negative. This was also mentioned in a podcast that I have called "Making Friends."

Hi, Jess,

I've really enjoyed reading these two posts (the one on the Phillies) and this one on Papa's rules, in preparation for class today. You do write so very well in this format, and it makes for GREAT reading! Your chosen quote sounds like a good one for all of us, regardless of our leadership role ...as mentors, teachers, or learners. Thanks for sharing this with us!Yeah, Phillies. tjc

HAHA...you are too funny. I am glad that you were able to slow things down and get on the right track. Things can definitely feel overwhelming at times in this degree program, which is a good thing! We are challenged...and we learn from those challenges. I think our upcoming cultural analysis is going to be a VERY interesting assignment for us all...and I look forward to hearing what new things we might have learned as a result. I think I have a pretty good grasp of my own culture at work, but something tells me I am going to uncover much more...and that can certainly be a good thing! ;)
