passion
just after i posted my last blog, the phillies won the world series. passion is so incredible. i don’t care what sport it is or what team it may be, i absolutely love seeing displays of pure passion. the players are so serious and “tough” the whole time, all of them strong, capable athletes with reputations to uphold. but then there’s that moment when they realize- every single person at the same time- that the last split-second of play has made them win the game, and in this case the world series. at that moment, all stress, all seriousness, all toughness disappears and the men erupt in uncontrollable happiness. they are so excited to have won that they drop their manly images and run toward each other, embrace in smiling hugs, and jump on top of each other in a huge pile of silly excitement.
sports are amazing like that. and being in a stadium during a game is always incredible. here you are in the stands with several thousand people. men, women, children, young, old, black, white, gay, straight, large, small…whatever. these people grew up in different neighborhoods, with different religions, are voting for different candidates, have very different jobs, interests, families, styles… all walks of life. but they have one thing in common- they like the same baseball team. and when these totally different people come together in a stadium and realize they are cheering for the same team, suddenly they are allies. people who would never have a conversation anywhere else find common ground in matching t-shirts bearing the same logo.
passion is amazing, and sports bring that out. whether you like the phillies or not, you have to admit that this is pretty awesome.
